Are You Applying Your Skin Care in the Wrong Order? A Medical Aesthetician Explains What Goes First

You've invested in a shelf full of serums, essences, moisturisers and treatments. But if you're applying them in the wrong order, you may be wasting both your money and your time. The sequence in which you layer skincare products can significantly affect how well they absorb and whether they deliver the results you expect. We spoke to a medical aesthetician to find out what should go first, what should follow, and where most people go wrong.

Why the order matters

Skincare products are formulated with different molecular sizes and delivery systems. Lighter, water-based products with smaller molecules are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin, while heavier, oil-based products sit on the surface to seal in moisture. If you apply a rich cream before a lightweight serum, the cream can create a barrier that prevents the serum from reaching the skin. The result: your active ingredients don't work as well, and your skin may feel congested or greasy.

The general rule is to apply products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. Think of it as building a layer cake — each layer needs to settle before the next one goes on top. But there are exceptions and nuances, especially when it comes to active ingredients, sunscreen and makeup.

Step 1: Cleanser

Everything starts with a clean canvas. A gentle cleanser removes dirt, oil, sweat and remnants of the previous night's products. If your skin is dry or sensitive, choose a cream or gel cleanser that doesn't strip the skin barrier. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, a foaming cleanser can help control excess sebum. Avoid over-cleansing — twice a day is usually sufficient for most skin types.

Step 2: Toner or essence

Toners have evolved far beyond the astringent, alcohol-heavy formulas of the past. Modern toners and essences are designed to hydrate, soothe and prepare the skin for the products that follow. They help restore the skin's pH balance after cleansing and can deliver a first layer of hydration. Apply a few drops to your palms and press gently into the skin, or use a cotton pad if you prefer. If your toner contains exfoliating acids, use it only a few times a week rather than daily.

Step 3: Serum or treatment

This is where the active ingredients live — vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, retinol, peptides and more. Serums are concentrated formulas designed to target specific concerns such as dullness, fine lines, pigmentation or dehydration. Apply your serum to damp skin for better absorption. If you're using multiple serums, start with the thinnest and most water-based formula, then move to thicker or oil-based ones. For example, apply a hyaluronic acid serum before a vitamin C serum if the vitamin C formula is thicker. If you're using retinol, apply it at night and follow with a moisturiser to reduce irritation.

Step 4: Eye cream

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, so it deserves its own product. Apply a small amount of eye cream gently around the orbital bone using your ring finger, which applies the least pressure. Eye creams can be applied before or after your facial serum, depending on the consistency. If your eye cream is lighter than your serum, apply it first; if it's thicker, apply it after.

Step 5: Moisturiser

Moisturiser seals in all the layers you've applied and helps maintain the skin barrier. It prevents water loss and keeps the skin comfortable throughout the day. Choose a moisturiser that suits your skin type — a gel or light lotion for oily skin, a richer cream for dry skin, and a fragrance-free formula for sensitive skin. Apply it gently in upward motions, avoiding tugging or rubbing.

Step 6: Sunscreen (morning only)

Sunscreen is the most important skincare step for preventing premature ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as the final step in your morning routine. It should go on after moisturiser and before makeup. Use about two finger-lengths of product for the face and neck, and don't forget your ears and the back of your hands. Reapply every two to three hours if you're outdoors or near windows.

Where most people go wrong

One of the most common mistakes is applying sunscreen before moisturiser, which dilutes the sunscreen and reduces its protective effect. Another is using too many active ingredients at once — layering vitamin C, retinol and exfoliating acids in the same routine can overwhelm the skin and cause irritation. If you're using multiple actives, alternate them between morning and night, or use them on different days. Another common error is skipping the wait time between products. While you don't need to wait minutes between every layer, giving thicker products a moment to absorb before applying the next one can help prevent pilling.

The bottom line

The right skincare order follows a simple principle: thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based, and sunscreen last in the morning. Cleanser, toner or essence, serum, eye cream, moisturiser and sunscreen form the backbone of a solid routine. But the best routine is one you'll actually stick to. If you're short on time, a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and a sunscreen are the non-negotiables. Everything else is a bonus. Pay attention to how your skin responds, adjust as needed, and remember that consistency matters more than complexity. Your skin will thank you.
